Hot Yoga Conditioning

Hot Yoga is mentally challenging for athletes of all abilities due to the testing hot conditions created in the ‘Heat Chamber’. It’s no wonder why Andy Murray turned to Hot Yoga. Murray’s trainers suggested he try the classes, which last a gruelling 90 minutes in a room heated to 40C, in preparation for the Australian Open. To his delight, he found that it improved not only his fitness, flexibility and ability to cope with high temperatures, but also his “mental strength”. “I’ve been mentally weak for such a long time and not held up in pressure situations,” he said after the match with Federer in Dubai. The Scots tennis star says the extreme workout helped him beat Roger Federer. Maybe it can work wonders for you too…….. The Sunday Times, March 30, 2008

You see more and more athletes such as Ryan Giggs turning to yoga.   Yoga helps to improve overall athleticism by stabilizing the core muscles and building flexibility and strength in and around the joints which helps to prevent injury.

Runners often complain of knee and lower back pain often caused by the constant pounding on the joints. Practicing yoga will help increase the range of motion in the joints, strengthen surrounding tissues, spine and hips which will keep you running for longer.  Learning deep stretches for after running will help to lengthen the connective tissue as it works to repair itself.

Golfers need a great range of motion throughout the shoulders and hips to get everything possible into their swing.  Having the functional strength and control allows the swing to remain constant from the backswing, through impact and into the follow through.

Spinal twists and deep hip openers improve the range of motion of the spine allowing for a fuller, more powerful back swing and follow through. Core strengthening improves the proximal stability and power behind the swing.   Shoulder openers balance the upper body by strengthening weak muscles and stretching tight tissues, thereby enhancing the fluidity in the swing and reducing the risk of injury.
